Every site on Chinese Astrology I've visited so far says that every day is divided into 12 parts, and the exact same couple of hours are governed by the exact same sign every day. Clear, so far.
But I could never get why the hour of birth is to be considered at local time. If the same sign-say Rooster-always governs the 17:00-19:00 interval, shouldn't it be the same, regardless of what corner of the world u were born in?
It would make sense to me that the hour of birth be converted into universal time, before checking the Chinese Horary Ascendants Table. Same hours means the same day for everyone. Any thoughts?

Re: Ascendants-IMPORTANT
Sat, November 17, 2007 - 3:46 PMIt's hard to say for sure. Every book I've read just says that it's that way. I suspect, however, that it has to do with the position of the moon relative to the planet at any particular hour.

Re: Ascendants-IMPORTANT Hi Sandra
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 1:23 PM“Location Location Location” you heard that one before there’s the connection
You make some very advanced questions in your query some of which are ancient in nature.
Time is sectioned into angelic watches as well but for a example of your questions complexity which I’m sure you didn’t intend it brings up these watches but for practical application. I will say look at the day sunrise to sunset it isn’t always a 12 hour cycle lets say the hours become longer or shorter depending on that alone for example 5am sunrise to 5 pm sunst would work out a 12 hour day but 7 am to 5pm would make the hours 2 hours less so your hours are only 50 minutes long instead of 60 minutes. Also the stars and moon have moved in there (the L word ) Locations these 5,768 years thereby complicating the correct insight into the basic core of the whole of it. Or as they say close but no cigar. So its a lot more complicated. Hmm where’s a astronomer. Good question you asked and it reminds me of a quote
" Great People talk about Ideas....
Average People talk about Events
Small People Talk about People..."
Oh and for Alaska, Antarctica there’s more questions and answers weeeeeeeeeeeee

Re: Ascendants-IMPORTANT Hi Sandra
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 6:57 AMwell, I really don't know. I'm not that advanced in Chinese astrology, but the definition I've read about the hour Ascedants is that "the Chinese believed in dividing the day into 12 equal time intervals and assigning an animal to each"-and the fact that they referred to it as "the day", and also since Chinese astrology isn't based on calculating the stars' positions according to the Earth-geocentrically, like Western astrology, I am inclined to believe that "the day" should be all for one, and one for all.
But, yeah, on the other hand, what means "day" to me could be another's "night"...but I haven't read anything about the hour ascendants having to do with the sun's position towards the Earth-or the place of birth, more specifically. If u know on any such rule, do tell and save us from insecurity ... -

The Chinese zodiac is also used to label times of day, with each sign corresponding to a "large-hour" or shichen (時辰), which is a two-hour period (24 divided by 12 animals). It is therefore important to know the exact time of birth to determine it. The secret animal is thought to be a person’s truest representation, since this animal is determined by the smallest denominator: a person’s birth hour. As this sign is based on the position of the sun in the sky and not the time of your local clock, it is important to compensate for daylight savings time. However, some online systems already compensate for daylight savings time, and astrologers may compensate your time for you oblivious to the fact that you've compensated it yourself, leading to an inaccurate reading. -

Re: Ascendants-IMPORTANT Hi Sandra
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 11:45 AMOne reason I like local astrology is that I believe that your location on the earth can be as important as our location in the cosmos, at least on the microcosmic scale. The planets have an affect on us, but so does our family and our natural environment. If you live along a vein of quartz or iron or near a volcano or by the ocean, that might have a more direct impact on you than mercury. I like to look at astrology as a series of influences, not as a description of the total person. -
